What does homework look like in 1st grade?
Homework will be sent home nightly in the FALCON folder (see below for an explanation of this binder). Please take the time to look over the homework with your child and review any difficult concepts. Please do not do your child’s work for him or her. It only hurts your child in the long run if you complete homework for him or her. This is their time to practice what they learned in class. They have reviewed these skills at school and should be able to complete the homework with little assistance. It is also my expectation that you attempt to read with your child daily. Research has shown that at least 15 minutes of additional reading outside of school can make a huge difference in a child’s educational success. If you would like additional reading materials to be sent home in addition to the ones sent with homework, please let me know and I will send extra reading books home. Thank you in advance for your help and support with homework!

What is a FALCON folder?

Your child will have a FALCON folder that will come home every night.  It is necessary that this folder comes to school every day. The left side of the binder will contain items that can be left at home. The right side of the folder will contain items that need to come right back to school. Your child’s weekly progress and behavior report will also come home in the FALCON folder. Please check this binder for completed work, updated grades, and notes on behavior. If you have any a note or paperwork that needs to come back to school, please place it in your child’s FALCON folder and I will be sure to get it the next day. Check the FALCON folder daily for homework, notes from school, and any other communication.

How will I know what is happening in class?
Every Monday, a class newsletter will be sent home with your child in his or her FALCON folder. In this newsletter you will find a week at a glance, and upcoming events in our classroom. This newsletter will help keep you informed of events taking place in our classroom. We also have a class website http://firstgradescholars.blogspot.com . This site will be updated weekly and will contain much of the same information found in our newsletter. It also has links to educational sites where your child can practice his or her skills further at home. Please feel free to call me with any other questions that the news
